Bacteria are single cell organisms with a simple cell organization. They replicate fast (some every 20 min). Bacteria are omnipresent. Usually they are analyzed by classical culture methods using specific media. These assays are easy to perform, cost effective and often fast. However in cases where slow growing bacteria are of interest (e.g. Listeria), PCR may be useful. Also in cases where characterization is difficult to perform. The quantification by PCR is less prone to individual variations of the staff. A drawback of PCR is that also death cells are taken in account. But in many cases this plays not a role and in case of exclusion this may even be an advantage indication a problem earlier.
We analyse liquid samples for Fusaria, Pseudomonas etc.
