Analytical Laboratory: Viruses
Viruses are protein particles containing nucleic acids (RNA or DNA). They require intact cells to propagate. The host cell specificity varies from very specific to unspecific. Viruses behave different to bacteria in the environment. One of the most powerful method to detect and characterize viruses is PCR. Viruses, which can not be cultivated, are exclusively detected by amplification techniques like PCR.
