VIRUSES

Viruses consist of nucleic acids (RNA or DNA) enveloped by protein particles. Their reproduction involves intact host cells. Host cell specificity varies from highly specific to non-specific. Viruses behave differently in the environment than bacteria. Viruses often cannot be cultured or only with great effort. However, viruses can be clearly identified by PCR and RT-PCR (reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction).
